Cyber Security Strategy Refresh
Broadcasting, Communications and Digital Media Minister, Hon Clare Curran, announced on 12 April 2018 a refresh of New Zealand’s Cyber Security Strategy and Action Plan.
This refresh is considering whether the government has the right resources and the right arrangements to address the increasing cyber threats facing New Zealand.
- The National Cyber Security Centre, which focuses on countering sophisticated cyber threats and protecting New Zealand’s networks of national importance, recorded 396 incidents over the 2016-17 year.
- The National Cyber Security Centre estimates that advanced cyber threats have the potential to cause $640m harm annually to New Zealand’s organisations of national significance.
- Since CERT NZ was established in April 2017 it has received 1100 reports of cyber incidents with a total loss of $5.3 million.
The government’s work on cyber security will complement its focus on digital rights, digital inclusion, digital innovation and digital government services.
The refresh is being led by the National Cyber Policy Office within the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet. It will involve a wide range of government agencies.
The Cabinet paper and Terms of Reference for the refresh of the Cyber Security Strategy and Action Plan have been proactively released by the Minister of Broadcasting, Communications and Digital Media.
In the week of 25 June the National Cyber Policy Office held workshops in Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch on the refresh of New Zealand’s Cyber Security Strategy and Action Plan (released in 2015).
The workshops were an opportunity to hear from a diverse range of stakeholders, including Connect Smart partners and the broader community. This included representatives from multi-national corporations, telecommunications companies, energy companies, banks and financial services, insurance, district health boards, a range of cyber security and IT providers, universities and other tertiary education providers, non-government organisations and more.
